Exploring Changes in Matter

Is it Physical or Chemical Change?

The question we tried to answer was is a physical or a chemical change occurring. We did this because we wanted to know the difference between a chemical and physical change and how to know if it is either chemical or physical.

How we did this was that we did an experiment in the experiment we did 5 example between physical and chemical examples.
The five examples were:
  • Water with Salt
  • Copper and Heat
  • Sodium hydroxide and Copper nitrate
  • Hydrochloric acid and Sodium bicarbonate
  • Paraffin wax heated by water

Our claim was that the physical change is physical because it is the same thing before and after therefore nothing new. a chemical change is a chemical because its new and different.

Our evidence was that the physical changes were water and salt and paraffin wax.  Because in the end it was still water, salt, and paraffin wax. The chemical changes were copper and heat, sodium hydroxide and copper nitrate, hydrochloric acid and sodium bicarbonate. This were chemical change because copper changed color from being exposed to heat. Another chemical change was sodium hydroxide and copper nitrate because two liquids turned into a gelatin solid. The last chemical change was hydrochloric acid and sodium bicarbonate its a chemical change because it fizzed and became a gas.
